Hazel Park Preparatory Academy Leadership Changes for 2026-27

Dear Hazel Park Community,

As some of you know, Principal Duane Dutrieuille has shared that he is planning to retire in December 2026. He will continue to serve as principal at Hazel Park until his retirement date. I’d like to thank Principal Dutrieuille for his nine years of service to Hazel Park, and two decades of service to Saint Paul Public Schools.

To assist in this transition, Dr. Chreese Jones will join the Hazel Park leadership team starting July 1. Beginning in January, Dr. Jones will be your full-time principal. This plan allows for Principal Dutrieuille and Principal Jones to work side-by-side for several months to ensure a seamless transition. 

Dr. Jones has most recently served as a Principal on Special Assignment, helping support the curriculum design for the new Benjamin E. Mays Afrocentric Magnet. Prior to that, she served as principal of Global Arts Plus, another SPPS PreK-8 school. 

We are excited to introduce Dr. Jones to the Hazel Park community. Below are a few words she’d like to share.

Hello HPPA Family! I am so incredibly honored to be joining your team. I believe in relationships first. I care about the people doing the work. I also believe that our scholars are the heartbeat of everything we do. Who I am when I’m not at school:

• I am a proud mother of three and a grandmother of four. My family is my world, and a "family-first" mentality extends to how I view our school community.
• You’ll often find me fishing or singing (I will burst into song in the hallways!)
• I have a Chihuahua mix named Kojack. He’s keeping me on my toes lately!

I am here to listen, to partner with you and Principal Dutrieuille, and to support the incredible work you are already doing. I can’t wait to meet each of you and hear your stories! - Dr. Jones

As part of these changes, assistant principal Ashley Childs will be transitioning to another role within SPPS after the current school year. I’d like to thank Mrs. Childs for her dedicated service to Hazel Park.
