October 7 School Board Discussion

The logo for Saint Paul Public Schools, featuring a white abstract "SP" design with a star at the end of an upward-curving line, all within a white rectangle. To the right of the rectangle, "Saint Paul" is written in larger white text, with "PUBLIC SCHOOLS" in smaller white text below it. The entire logo is set against a solid blue background.

Dear Hazel Park Preparatory Academy Families,

I am writing to you with information that could impact our school starting in the 2026-27 school year. On Tuesday afternoon, the SPPS Board of Education will hear a presentation about options for supporting the growth of the district’s Txuj Ci HMong Language and Culture program. Currently, the school includes a Hmong Studies and Hmong Dual Language program across two campuses (PreK-4 and 5-8).

With a longer-term plan for Txuj Ci to become a standalone PreK-8 campus in 2030 or later, there is community interest in an interim solution starting in the 2026-27 school year. The presentation will include two options:

  • moving the K-5 Hmong Studies program into Hazel Park, alongside the IB program, in fall 2026
  • moving the K-5 Hmong Studies program to the 1305 Prosperity Ave. building, which is currently vacant, in fall 2026

No decision will be made at the meeting tomorrow. The meeting is at 4:30 p.m. at 360 Colborne St. and is open to the public. You can also listen to the livestream or recording of the meeting, and view the presentation on the Board of Education website.

The Board will vote on this topic at an upcoming meeting in October or November. If they decide to move forward with one of the options, it would go into effect in fall 2026--next school year.

Thank you for being part of our Hazel Park community. I will keep you informed as this process moves forward.

Thank you,

Duane Dutrieuille, Principal
