Ms. Carmel Larson, WINN Literacy (K-3) Teacher

Hello, Hazel Park Hornets!

I am so happy to be a WINN Literacy Teacher (K-3) at Hazel Park Preparatory Academy.  WINN stands for 'What I Need Now.'  Here are some key facts about WINN:

• WINN Literacy is a 3 year program (2021-2024) funded by the American Rescue Plan (ARC);
• It will help address “long-term student literacy outcomes for students who have been impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic;”
• It teaches students to use the science of reading (phonics, decoding, basic skills);
• It provides 15-30 minute small group instruction time three to five times per week.

I work with kindergarten through 3rd grade students to help them achieve their literacy goals and become the best readers they can be.  I love the humor, directness, and honesty of primary students!

I have been teaching since 1997 (computers, first grade, EL substitute, Title 1 Tutor).  I took a 10 year break to raise my twin girls, Claudia and Claire.  They are sophomores at Luther College in Iowa this year (it goes fast!).
